Owls are special for everyone who experiences them, and Barred Owls are among the most common to hear, and if one is lucky, to see, including around the Earlham campus. There have been many times over the years that distinguishing between a real owl call and a human imitation has been necessary. At one time it was not uncommon for former Earlham ornithology professors Jim Cope and Bill Buskirk to get one another’s attention walking across campus with a booming Barred Owl call—sounding in human words like “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” Students in ornithology have been known to do the same! The Barred Owl on this wool beanie represents Earlham’s deep strength in ornithology, unparalleled among small colleges. Earlham Birders are scientists, conservationists,
and lovers of birds and nature around the globe. Wear this beanie proudly and often!
The beanie is made of 100% New Zealand Merino Wool. The Earlham label was woven in Oregon, and the beanie was sewn in Minnesota by Northrune Clothing (northruneclo.com) which plants a tree for every beanie sold.
